Madrid TheatreCanoga Park, CAArchitect for this 11,000 s.f. building for the Los Angeles Community Redevelopment Agency. Constructed on a 50 x 140 ft. site, the Madrid Theatre may be the world's largest performing arts center on the smallest site. It houses 500 for symphony, dance and musical performances and can be sized down to 250 for more intimate dramatic plays. Moving pocketed drapes allow for variable acoustics. The side walls are scalloped with corrugated metal panels to prevent parallex. Light bridges, catwalks and a unistrut grid allow for full stage lighting flexibility and for spot flying of sets. The stage is configured as an orchestra shell that can also receive sets. The catenary curve in the roof/ceiling optimizes sound disbursement. |

A spiral spine representing the flow of life and dynasties brings the visitor through 11 galleries and 5 millennia in multimedia/interactive exhibits. Photovoltaic cells in the spine capture the sun's energy and the gold leaf exterior will endure as long as the pyramids have. The above theatre design was a competition finalist. |

Ingomar TheatreEureka, CAArchitects for the redevelopment of a second story flag lot theatre built in 1892 for the production of the play "Ingomar". Located in a redevelopment area, the 1892 theatre has been 80% gutted and destroyed; this design re-created the space as a 630-seat performing arts center meeting today's technical and code standards including an expanded fly loft. New stairs were added at the rear to meet egress requirements and provide seismic buttressing. The building's Victorian exterior is restored with a dramatic emphasis at the theatre's entrance. |
